Canadian Sushi Restaurant Faces Backlash Over Influencer’s Food Order

Paper Crane Sushi Bar and Bistro Apologizes for Misunderstanding

In today’s age, dining out at a beloved restaurant is a delightful experience, captivating our senses with a soothing ambiance and allowing us to unwind. As we peruse the menu, we eagerly select our desired appetizers, main courses, and delectable desserts. Yet, occasionally our enthusiasm for indulgence can lead us to order more food than necessary. Unfortunately, one woman found herself in such a predicament at a Sushi restaurant in Canada, where she was unexpectedly shamed by the waitress for her sizable food order.

Cassandra Mauro, an influencer, took to TikTok to recount her encounter at the ‘Paper Crane Sushi Bar and Bistro’ in Ontario, Canada. Accompanied by a friend, they placed an order that included chicken fried rice, shrimp tempura, noodles, and two sushi rolls. To their surprise, the waitress expressed disapproval, exclaiming, “No, no, no, too much food.” Even the manager approached their table, teasingly asking if they were hungry. The solution proposed was to relocate their table to accommodate the abundance of dishes.

Expressing her disappointment in a widely shared video on social media, Mauro revealed, “Throughout our meal, we could see the kitchen from where we were seated. The chef prepared our food while glancing at us and laughing. It’s ironic that in a restaurant where people come to order food, we were made fun of for doing just that.”

Following the incident, the Sushi restaurant in Canada faced a barrage of negative reviews, forcing them to disable comments on their social media pages. Subsequently, the establishment released a statement to address the situation and extend their apologies to the influencer. They clarified that the restaurant was a small family-run business owned by Koreans who had worked tirelessly to establish it and had a dedicated customer base. The statement from Paper Crane Sushi on Instagram read, “We sincerely apologize for any comments that may have caused a negative experience… Many of our staff members speak English as a second language, and we hope you understand that it was never our intention to judge you or anyone else at our restaurant.” They further shared that they had addressed the incident with their staff and were taking measures to overcome language barriers and ensure appropriate communication.

The conflicting perspectives between the influencer and the restaurant shed light on a situation where a misunderstanding occurred due to cultural and language differences. While Mauro felt ridiculed for her food choices, Paper Crane Sushi expressed regret over any unintended offense caused by their staff. It is essential to foster understanding and open dialogue to avoid such miscommunications in the future.
